Corporate Local Area Networks

A Large Local Area Network typically consists of several triangles – access layer switches connected to two distribution layer switches via high speed reliable media, typically multi mode fiber optic cable running Gigabit Ethernet.

Access layer switches provide large number of ports for end user connectivity and uplink ports for backbone connectivity. They support numerous redundancy and security features, such as VLANs, 802.1q trunks, 802.1p CoS, 802.1 Spanning tree. The main intelligence, however, is deployed at Core/Distribution layer switches this is where Layer 3 routing, VLAN termination, network and transport layer access control lists are applied.
